INTRODUCTION
St Mary’s tower houses a ring of six bells with the oldest
three being cast in 1635. The heaviest (tenor) bell was cast in 1701, and the
lightest (treble) was cast in 1964 as part of the re-hanging project that
augmented the then five bells to the current six.
This re-hanging project saw the present fifth bell re-cast, to
repair a crack that occurred in the late 1920’s, and also moved the ringers from
the West porch of the church, upstairs to the present ringing
chamber.
The
bells are regarded as some of the most easy to ring and have some of the most
tuneful peals in the area - having been judged the ‘best kept’ in the Bristol
Diocese on more than one occasion.
We
usually practice on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00pm and we also ring for Sunday
services, under the watchful eye of our Captain, David Miles. We welcome
visitors of all abilities, as we cover a range of ringing from well-struck call
changes to ‘surprise minor’.
